Being Creative During Lockdown

Don't be too harsh on yourself.

Mental health is important. Do what you can and set small goals even if it is just getting out of bed or having a shower.

Don't force it.

There's already a lot of pressure on every sector at the moment - we are living through a pandemic! Whether you've seen memes or versions of toxic productivity. Just because you are a creative person doesn't mean that you are super-human and can churn out the next bestseller or gallery piece from this time of upheaval. You are still a regular human trying to figure this out just like everyone else.

Switch up your workplace.

So you can't just go to IKEA or a thrift store and get a new desk with new prints and shelving. So get into a new level of DIY and create your own space. It's a refreshing way to create (unless you're already an interior designer) and will take your mind off of the weight of the world for a moment.

Support other creatives.

It's a great time to collaborate because everyone is going through a very similar unexpected thing. Chat, connect (maybe not on Zoom if you've been dreading it all week), stream their bedroom concert and share it with a friend, bounce ideas off of each other. This will keep your mind fresh and reassured that you can still explore the world around you through the lens of your art and that you're not alone.

Explore other ways to be creative.

If you've seen the promo for #AVRACREATE you will already know that you don't need to stick to one creative stream. Yeah, you may be a writer that sucks at painting but that's okay. Try cooking or dancing or exploring fashion or maybe fresh ways to organise your houseplants.

With all of these things considered, remember to be in the moment. This is a tough time and you may thankfully have the privilege to #stayathome. You don't need to strive for productivity or to be a perfect version of yourself whilst inside. Just do you or maybe do nothing someday. This has broken up our hustle culture so why are we trying to fit hustle into a time of rest?

Join the movement. #ISOCONVO is a collaborative project between Lara Antoine, Meta Meta Collective and AVRA encouraging each other to live in the moment and 'do nothing' through a series of still 5-10 second videos.
